LD8 LUDDITE'S RETROCHALLENGE BLOG: WINTER WARM-UP 2009

Some Progress!

It's been a few days since I've posted, but that doesn't mean I've been idle... in fact I've been quite busy bashing my head against the wall.

So far I've got a pretty good start on the message board program (which I'm calling "Confab" until I think of something wittier). Initially I was writing it as a standard multi-conference board, but I soon realized that I was making it much more complicated than necessary... after all, my current BBS only has 4 or 5 regular users who seem to get by just fine with a single, multi-purpose conference.

What I've got so far is an extremely basic BBS that can figure out who the user is, determine what the last-read message is and allows messages to be read in forward or reverse sequence. At the moment message composition is a bit problematic... I've opted for a virtually feature-free line editor whose available commands can be listed on a single line. Messages are limited to 20 lines, which isn't exactly a lot, but it seems adequate for the task at hand. At the moment something is wrong with the line delete command, but posting messages is at least possible.

It's a reasonable start, I'd say.
